Holistic Body Massage

Massage therapy is the medium of healing through touch. A therapist will use a set routine of Swedish massage techniques to relax a client and relieve overworked and tired muscles. For some clients, this may be all they need. However Holistic Body Massage therapy treats the whole person, not just the physical symptoms, and addresses your individual needs. The first step in this is to perform a consultation with you, during which a medical history is taken along with the current state of physical and emotional wellbeing, eating habits and lifestyle and work habits.

I will use this information to tailor a treatment plan to suit you, using various massage techniques ranging from the sweeping strokes of Swedish massage, to firmer pressures of Deep Tissue, and the stretches, releases and joint mobilisations of Integrated Myofascial Therapy.

A plan may involve returning for several massages on a regular basis, or occasional ‘maintenance’ treatments, depending on what you are seeking.

During a massage, you will recline on a massage couch, and oil is applied to each part of the body as they are treated. Holistic Body Massage promotes relaxation and can help ease aches and pains.

A session can last from 45 minutes, focussing on certain areas of the body, up to an hour and a quarter which covers the full body including the face, scalp and abdomen. I will adapt the pressure of strokes and techniques used to suit your needs and preferences.

Generally, massage promotes the suppleness of the muscles, improves circulation and reduces stress. It can have both physiological and psychological effects in the short and long term.

Physiological effects:

  • Short term – improve skin, encourage deeper breathing, reduce swelling, relieve muscle fatigue and stiff joints, promote relaxation encouraging sleep, speed up digestion.
  • Long term; improve skin elasticity and circulation, boost immunity, improve muscle suppleness, relax the nervous system, enable more efficient respiration, relieve insomnia, balance digestive system and lower high blood pressure.

Psychological effects:

  • Short term; relax body and mind, soothe and comfort, ‘lift’ emotions, increase energy.
  • Long term; enable sustained relaxation, improve body image awareness and general self-esteem, increase energy levels.
